About Marisco Vineyards
In 2003, Brent Marris began his search for a special vineyard property that could become the iconic hub for a future winery. Relying on a vast knowledge of the area built up as a youngster exploring the landscape that is Marlborough, he discovered an exceptional 268ha property on the banks of the Waihopai River. Named after one of the tallest peaks to the southeast of the vineyard, the Ned is a deeply personal project for Brent.
The vineyards of The Ned are located on the banks of the Waihopai River and on the southern side of the Wairau Valley. The Waihopai River runs the length of our 268ha vineyard – not only providing a picturesque boundary but also the origin of the ancient river shingles which contribute to the overall terroir of the vineyard. This location consistently enjoys warmer daytime temperatures and lower rainfall than areas to the north. These warm daytime temperatures, followed by cool nights encourage intense fruit development which are the hallmarks of the great wines of Marlborough.
The Ned offers a simple range of premium wines, sourced from the best fruit of the valley. The range includes varietals for which Marlborough is renowned – Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
Marlborough born and raised it is probably not surprising that Brent Marris has devoted his life to viticulture. After growing up on one of the first contract grown vineyards in Marlborough, Brent became the region’s first born and raised qualified winemaker, graduating from Roseworthy Agriculture College (South Australia) in 1983. With more than 20 years grape growing, winemaking and marketing experience, his history of crafting wines for the world are testament to his skill and passion. Brent is one of New Zealand’s most respected winemakers and has been at the forefront of New Zealand’s viticultural development. His outstanding ability to blend varietals in a manner that best represents regional style and character are renowned. Brent’s wines are famous for their fruit purity, structure and seamlessness, showing distinct regional and varietal character. Welcome to the Ned – an abiding symbol of the summit of Marlborough.
