About Te Whare Ra Wines
Founded in 1979 Te Whare Ra is the oldest boutique winery in Marlborough and has a long-standing reputation for producing some of New Zealand's finest aromatic wines. Family owned and operated, our winemaking philosophy is centred on producing limited release, hand-crafted wines from what are some of the oldest vineyards in Marlborough.
The name translates from Maori to mean "The House in the Sun" - which reflects our location in Renwick. The long summer sunlight hours, free-draining river shingle soils and cool winters which form part of the climate of our site continue to contribute to our successes in winemaking.
Our winemaking philosophy is centred on producing wines which express the characteristics of our site, and the region. We are endeavouring to produce wines with concentration, complexity, and texture whilst retaining finesse.
The attention to detail we are able to achieve in the winery and in the vineyard means that we can get the most out of our vines, and in turn the resultant wines. We produce Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris and Syrah from 2007.
The earliest plantings in our vineyard are some of the oldest in the region and these low-yielding vines provide us with a fantastic fruit resource. The winery at Te Whare Ra was constructed from mud bricks, and our Cellar Door is above the winery tanks and fermenters so that you can see our vintage in progress. The view from the balcony is worth a look, as you have a great view over the vineyard and down the Wairau to the Richmond Ranges.
We have had significant show success over the last decade, in particular with our Gewurztraminer which is sourced from a 27yr old block of vines - part of the original plantings.
