Desiree (Des) and Bob Covell are totally dedicated to growing their crops organically, and are proud of the Bio-Gro status accorded their tiny vineyard in August 1999. In fact, they go several steps beyond the Bio-Gro requirements. Their grapes are grown according to the bio-dynamic principles of philosopher and educationalist Rudolf Steiner. This means they qualify for Demeter classification, but they haven't applied for official recognition because Bio-Gro is a better-known standard overseas.Their vines receive only sprays based on small amounts of copper and lime, with seaweed also an important part of the equation. No insecticides are used, and mulch is employed extensively. Low cropping is also part of the Covells' philosophy. No more than three tonnes of grapes are harvested from each hectare - about a third of the national average. The Covell Estate range includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend, all made from the vineyard's own fruit. |
