Claddagh Vineyard
Russell & Suzann established Claddagh Vineyard on the famed Martinborough Terrace in 1992. Russell manages the winery and vineyard, assisted by our children, Eamonn and Sean (and some grown up help as well).
We have taken our time in becoming established, and sold most of our fruit until the vines matured. We released our first commercial wine (a Cabernet Sauvignon in 1994 which won a Gold Medal at the Air NZ National Wine awards). 1998 was our first vintage at home in our winery.
The 2001 vintage witnessed a dramatic change from a reasonably relaxed single or dual wine vintage to our vineyard's six wines and a substantially greater volume than ever before. What we discovered is that practice pays off, and that 10 years of preparing for vintage was worth it, everything went famously as has the 2002 vintage.
The wines hold all the promise we hoped for, the winery stood up to the volume well, and we look forward to forever refining and improving our wines.
