The former Huthlee Estate winery on the Heretaunga Plains west of Hastings has a new name, having been acquired by Kiwi Ian Kevern and his English wife Denise.
Vineyard manager Paul Parsonson, who was previously with Alpha Domus, says that the existing grape varieties, some of which date back as far as the late 1970s, will be retained. However, the yields will be reduced and the familiar Kaweka Red brand – a low-priced blended red – has been discontinued.
The vineyard, on pumice sands over a dry riverbed, has plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The wine is made at Matakiri.
