Background - The land was purchased by five families in 1995. They are long-standing residents of Central Otago and have a history in farming and horticulture. In 1996 they noticed that land elsewhere was being sold for wine production and after consultation with a local viticulturist it was decided to plant out a vineyard. The site of the Pisa Moorings vineyard on the shores of Lake Dunstan was known to have high Growing Degree Days (GDD) from historical records going back to when the area was surveyed for the construction of the Clyde Dam for hydro-electricity. The owners were keen to develop the land for viticulture even though they were well aware of the vagaries of growing grapes in an area known for its extremes of climate. Experts were employed in the field of wine production - viticulturist, Ian Cunliffe and his team who carefully manage the vines and Dean Shaw respected and well-known winemaker from the Central Otago Wine Company. The months prior to harvest Dean and Ian assess the grapes checking brix levels and other factors before Dean gives the go-ahead for the hand picking harvest to commence – Pinot Noir grapes are usually harvested from the end of March to the beginning of April. Tonnage can vary considerably from vintage to vintage due to the vagaries of this mediterranean type climate. Average yield in Central Otago is 4 tonnes per hectare for Pinot Noir and 8 tonnes per hectare for Pinot Gris. The Vineyard - Located approximately 10 km from Cromwell going north towards Wanaka on SH6. 7.29 hectares of Pinot Noir vines, clones 10/5, 6, 115, and 667 planted out 1997. First vintage 2001. 1.24 hectares of Pinot Gris vines, clones 2/15, 2/21 and Smith planted out 2005. First vintage will be 2008. Awards - Pisa Moorings has won many awards for it’s Pinot Noir wine. Amongst these are the 2003 vintage which was selected in the Top 12 Pinot Noirs from Central Otago. In 2006 the 2004 vintage won silver at the International Wine & Spirit Challenge UK and was also selected in the Top 10 New Zealand Pinot Noir wines by Cuisine magazine. |
