This is the first Sauvignon Blanc grown on the cooler limestone hills of Central Hawke's Bay, 40km south of hastings. Rosie Butler (winemaker) started her career in winemaking in 1974 with Montana Wines. Rosie was involved with the first two vintages Montana had in blenheim 1977 & 1978. This lead her to her decision at the prestigious Roseworthy College in South Australia. Following graduation, Rosie worked as a winemaker for Montana in Gisborne and then the respected Petaluma near Adelaide.Rosie came back to Hawke's Bay with husband Rodger Tynan in 2000 to start up Lime Rock with brothers Peter and Warwick. They believe pinot noir and sauvignon blanc on limestone hills is the next big terrior focus in New Zealand. Hills allow could air to drain, and give frost free growing conditions. Constant air movement give less disease. The limestone rock provides free draining and bio-logically active soils that give distinctive character to the wines. Giant oyster and fossil scallop shells, which are depicted on the Lime Rock label, are some of the many fossils found in this unique soil. Pinot Noir & Merlot Cabernet Franc are in barrel and will be released next year. |
