The vineyard began as a change to a “lifestyle block“ for Digby & Janine initially as contract growers. The Terroir and cool climate with severe frosts during winter result in distinctive regional characteristics in the grapes. These characteristics have been encouraged in the style of winemaking since the introduction of the Tram Road Label. All varietals are allowed to have their own distinctive fruit flavours flow through in the wine making process. This resulted in the first Tram Road vintage ( 2002) sending 2 samples to the 2003 Bragato Wine Awards and winning Gold with the 2002 Riesling and Bronze with the 2002 Pinot Noir. The awards giving recognition to the work done on the vineyard has resulted in total emphasis being given to the “ Hands On” care of the vines, reduced cropping volumes and care and attention with shoot positioning and thinning. Grapes are taken to Waipara where the winemaker, Kym Rayner works with the fruit characters and allows them to flow through the wines. The wines are currently sold locally through liquor outlets, supermarkets and are available in a number of bars and restaurants. They will be looking at distributors for the North Island to expand the sales. |
