One of New Zealand's leading winegrowers, CJ Pask Winery is based in the Hawke's Bay region, with vineyards in the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural area. Established in 1985 by Chris Pask, with vineyard holdings of 220 acres, CJ Pask Winery has established itself over almost twenty years as the pre-eminent producer of merlot and merlot-based red wine blends in this country. Consistent critical praise and competition success here and in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada have emphasised the skill, passion and dedication of the people behind the wines. Winning the International Wine Challenge (London) Bordeaux and Cabernet Merlot Trophy in 2000 was an appropriate recognition of those attributes as well as serving notice on the world that New Zealand is now producing truly exceptional red wines. The winery has benefited immensely from the services of highly regarded winemaker and Managing Director Kate Radburnd over the last decade. Hawkes Bay Winemaker of the Year in 2001, she is one of the most experienced winemakers in New Zealand, was a Director of the Wine Institute of New Zealand for many years and is a regular wine show judge today. The company's vineyards in the Gimblett Road area are an immeasurably valuable asset. Consisting of river stones, shingle and silt, spread by the nearby Ngaruroro River, they are possibly the country-s best terroir for growing the classic Bordeaux grape varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Summer temperatures are often 5 - 6 degrees warmer than surrounding sites and coupled with the infertile and free-draining soils, this provides superb conditions for premium winegrowing. In addition, Chardonnay and Syrah perform extremely well, allowing outstanding wines to be made from these grapes also. Kate and C J Pask Winery are leaders in the field of sustainable viticulture & winemaking in New Zealand. ISO14001 accredited, the winery has put in place rigorous procedures and systems to ensure minimal impact on the environment both in the vineyard and cellar operations. Kate is the founding and current Chair of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. CJ Pask produces a range of wines at three levels, each one carefully crafted to offer distinctive character and style. Reserve wines: Produced in very limited quantities and only in vintages when the estate grown fruit quality is exceptional. Rich elegant wines with concentration, length and depth of flavour, offering complexity and balance that lifts them above other wines in their class. Cellaring ability of up to 20 years. Chardonnay Merlot Syrah Declaration (a classic Bordeaux blend) Gimblett Road wines: Sourced from our estate vineyards on the Gimblett Gravels, this range of superb wines delivers the ripe taste of the Hawke-s Bay region. Full-flavoured, full-bodied, with an emphasis on ripe fruit they offer well-integrated oak character, soft rounded textures and well-integrated tannin structure. From our dry, hot gravelly vineyard, these wines are wonderfully ripe, ready now, but they will become more complex with several years age.
