Burnt Spur Martinborough Limited released a premium range of wines in November 2002. The first release of pinot noir, vintage 2001, was awarded a gold medal at the prestigious 2002 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Burnt Spur Martinborough Limited is a public unlisted company. Under direction from a new Board of Directors and new management the company is determined to establish a reputation as a consistently high quality Martinborough wine producer. CEO Stephanie Hagen was appointed May 2002 and brings to Burnt Spur wide experience in the Marlborough wine industry and business management. The winemaker Sam Weaver brings senior international experience and skill to the company. Sam has a reputation for producing premium wines and has consulted for a number of high profile New Zealand producers. He was previously Senior Winemaker for Corban's Stoneleigh, particularly responsible for fine pinot noir and riesling. Assistant winemaker is Sally Albrecht, a post graduate winemaker with several years experience in both New Zealand and Burgundy. The extensive company owned vineyards are managed by Michelle Crawford. Michelle has a post graduate oenology and viticulture degree and has worked in Oregon, Canterbury and Martinborough. She came to us from Craggy Range Vineyards and brings specific experience in young vine maintenance and vineyard development. The flagship Burnt Spur wine is pinot noir with this being the predominant variety grown. There are extensive plantings of new Dijon Burgundy clones over three vineyard sites, each with specific terroir. Together with the free draining Martinborough terraces, we have also planted an 80 acre site comprising soil profiles from clay loess to silt loam. This will allow for more blending options to create a complex final wine. Burnt Spur also produces sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, riesling, syrah and viognier. The total 130 acres of company owned Martinborough vineyards will be fully producing by 2006. The majority of the wines will be exported as well as available domestically through selected fine wine retailers and fine dining restaurants. |
