Burings of Martinborough
After making wine for various Martinborough wineries, Chris Buring has established his own winemaking business. Together with his English wife, Polly, Chris has converted a barn into a boutique winery on their Oak House bed and breakfast property.
Before the barn was refurbished, Chris used the winemaking facility at Muirlea Rise to produce his first wines in the 2002 vintage. Grapes were purchased from growers in the southern Wairarapa to make a Riesling, Rose and Pinot Noir. The wine will be called 'Rinato', meaning 'born again', a reference to the rebirth of the Buring name made famous in Australia by Chris' great-uncle, Leo Buring, who produced a string of outstanding Rieslings (among other great wines) many years ago.
Polly, a former scientist with the DSIR, has operated her own analytical laboratory for wine and olive oil for the past seven years.
The couple also plan to run residential 'gourmet weekends' at Oak House, which will include cooking demonstrations and tutored wine tastings.
