All Brightwater Vineyards wines are made from grapes grown on our own vineyards. The vineyards are in three blocks on the one property totalling nine hectares in all. That property is located at the inland end of the ancient Hope River terrace on the Waimea Plains. At that point the terrace is about 8 metres above the Wairoa River flood plain and sloping gently towards the sea.
The vineyards overlook the village of Brightwater and are a twenty minute drive south west of Nelson. The soil type is Ranzau stony loam. These are deep alluvial gravels more than ten metres deep. They are covered with about 200 mm of dark brown-grey very stoney topsoil of low to moderate fertility. The soils are so free draining that you never see a puddle. Brightwater Vineyards are Accredited Vineyards under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand scheme.
The vineyards are managed by Gary who together with a team of regular vineyard workers attend to all the often labour intensive methods used to get the optimum fruit from the vines. Experience has shown us which management system is best for each of our different blocks to produce the style of wine that we desire. For example our Sauvignon Blanc is grown on a mixture of four cane vertical shoot and Scott Henry canopy systems while our Merlot is grown on the Silvos canopy system. Both two cane vertical shoot and cordon canopy systems are also employed. Not all the vineyard is used to produce Brightwater Vineyards wines. A portion of each block is used to produce contract fruit for other wineries. This allows us to select the best fruit for our own wine. Our winemaker is Sam Weaver. He is ably assisted by Mathew Patterson-Green and Gary. |
