Winemaking has been in the Wright family since the 1930's. Geoff Wright's Grandfather, Stanko Jurakovich, came from Yugoslavia when he was a child. He registered as a winemaker in the 1930's and was one of the first winemakers in Kumeu (West Auckland). He started up the San Marino Vineyard, which is now known as Kumeu River. Wrights Vineyard has been in business since 2000. They have two ranges of wines, being the GW range and the Entity range. The GW range of wines is the still range. The GW stands for the initials of the winemaker, Geoff Wright, and coincidentally Gisborne Wine. The GW range includes chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, gewurztraminer, merlot and a late harvest semillion. The Entity range of wines is the methode traditionnelle range. In September 2005, Wrights Vineyard planted out its organic vineyard in the renowned grape growing region of Ormond Valley, Gisborne. Their growing philosophy is to promote bio-diversity by adding positive micro-organisms, using compost sprays, planting natives and not using harmful chemicals such as fungicides, insecticides or herbicides. Currently under organic conversion status, the vineyard will be fully certified in 2008. Fully certified organic wines will be available in 2008/2009. Wrights Vineyard was the first winery in New Zealand to be certified by the Vegetarian Society. This does not mean that their wines are only for vegetarians. They do not use animal by-products in the fining process for quality reasons. They also keep their use of additives to a minimum. By adopting this style of winemaking, they aim to provide customers with the highest quality wines. |
