Walnut Ridge Estate
Walnut Ridge Estate, formerly owned by the late Bill Brink, is an exciting new acquisition for neighbouring Ata Rangi vineyard. Although production is very small, Walnut Ridge Pinot Noir enjoys a loyal following. The Ata Rangi team have decided to continue with, and build on, the Walnut Ridge brand for Pinot Noir in the New Zealand market.
The vineyard, winery and wine stock were purchased in November 2002. Walnut Ridge Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris 2002, both completed at Ata Rangi, made brief appearances on the market but are now virtually sold out. These grape varieties will be blended into the Ata Rangi label Sauvignon and Pinot Gris in the future.
Walnut Ridge Pinot Noir is to continue, effectively replacing the Ata Rangi Young Vines Pinot Noir label. Like the Young Vines, it will represent excellent value for money, remaining very accessible price-wise on cafe and restaurant lists.
Walnut Ridge Pinot Noir 2001 is now available for purchase from Eurowine, or by mail order on-line from the Walnut Ridge or Ata Rangi websites. This wine is the last Pinot Noir made by Bill, and was completed and bottled by winemaker Olly Masters at Ata Rangi. With an appealing sweet fruit entry and attractive plummy/red fruit characters layered with more complex, savoury, mushroomy/fungal notes typical of Pinot, it is ideal for drinking now. The limited stock is virtually sold out now, hence the decision to send you the Walnut Ridge Pinot Noir 2002 which is due to be released next month.
Walnut Ridge Pinot Noir 2002, also 100% Martinborough fruit, is enticingly fragrant, with primary varietal Pinot characters on the nose - plums, cherries, lovely floral rose/violet notes with spice and vanilla as well. It is smooth, supple wine - well structured with balance, richness and length. Available very soon from Eurowine and direct via the Walnut Ridge website.
