Waipara Downs Wines Ltd |
Waipara Downs is an 320 ha sheep and cattle farm specializing in the prime lamb market. It was purchased by Ruth and Keith Berry in 1986 and during that year Ruth planted what was one of the first vineyards in the Waipara region. The first plantings were of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay and Ruth had her first commercial vintage in 1991. During 1994 a winery was built, which over the years has expanded, and in 2001 son Scott Berry returned from a year in France to take over as Winemaker. Scott has since become a recognized winemaker within Waipara and Marlborough and has taken over the running of the entire vineyard/winery operation. Added to the original three varieties planted there is now Riesling, totalling 8.8 ha of top quality boutique vineyard. |
