Our family name Schwarzenbach translates into Blackenbrook. As a family, we work hands-on and are involved in every step, from grafting our own vines through to vineyard work, winemaking and selling the estate-grown wines with pride. Blackenbrook Vineyard has been our dream and passion since we met in Switzerland in 1996. With a clear vision and full of enthusiasm we moved to Nelson at the top of the South Island in 1998. We searched for the ideal piece of land for almost two years, before purchasing our 14ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway. The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate appealed to us at once. In winter 2000 we grafted our own vines and planted the first 4ha of our vineyard the following winter. Thanks to careful soil preparation, uncompromising weed control and a favourable growing season, the vines established quickly and produced their first crop at only 18 months of age. Healthy soil and strong vines are the main focus of our vineyard management. We operate with organic fertilisers and cover crops, keep herbicide and fungicide to a minimum and encourage earthworms by using mussel shells as mulch. Daniel’s winemaking is driven by passion and attention to detail. Like a caretaker, he gently guides the quality grapes through the winemaking process, forever following his ambition to encapsulate the varietal characters and our terroir. With the construction of our new winery here on site we are taking another step towards quality wine production. Daniel and the planning team have designed a gravity fed winery, partially dug into the clay bank. Minimal pumping, even cellar temperature and state-of-the-art winemaking equipment are the main focus. |
