Vynfieds Estate |
The vineyard was originally planted in 1991 with 1 hectare of Riesling and 3 hectares of miscellaneous vines. The latter were replaced by Martinborough proven Pinot Noir in 1998 by us, the new owners. We, are John Bell and Kaye McAulay, and have funded our passion for top quality Martinborough Dry Riesling and Pinot Noir, by working full time in both Wellington and Martinborough!
We moved the historic homestead Maranui from Lyall Bay in Wellington, across the Rimutaka Hills, to Martinborough (in 5 pieces!). The house was originally built for Nash in 1911 (who owned the Nash for Bags chain) and also owned for many years by the Wareham family. This was a homestead that Kaye had loved from a young age and we have enjoyed restoring it. A profile of the homestead appears on our wine labels.
Another of our projects was to carry out major renovations and redecoration (by Leanne Cully of Hotel d'Urville fame) of a cottage that was in a corner of the vineyard. This is now a very successful self sufficient homestay. We have also purchased a romantic Villa close by in Regent Street - complete with antiques inside and expansive garden and orchard. |
