When Annette Atkins and Gary Voss established Voss Estate in Martinborough in New Zealand, their aim was to produce a small selection of high quality, hand crafted wines. Today, Gary and Annette still share all the duties of vineyard management, wine making and marketing. Their business is very much a small, hands-on operation. With only 10 hectares under vine, yields are typically six tonnes / hectare or less.Gary and Annette’s first love is Pinot noir and they produce a world-class wine. Packed with ripe, richly seductive fruit and an incredibly long finish, their Pinot noir is considered one of the best in Martinborough. Believing that great wine starts in the vineyard, maximum effort is spend amongst the vines to produce the best quality fruit. The grapes are hand harvested, largely on flavour, followed by minimal processing in the winery to further retain fruit characteristics. A concentrated, barrel fermented Reserve Chardonnay partners the Pinot noir as the premium wines in their range. The balance is made up of Sauvignon blanc and Riesling. The vineyards lie on an ancient alluvial river terrace made up of deep, free-draining gravel overlaid by shallow silt loam. About 3 metres above sea level with typically around 300 mm of rain in the growing season. Settled autumns, with warm days and cool nights are perfect for producing fragrant, supple and powerful Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays with excellent fruit & acid balance. Gary, the wine maker, trained at Charles Sturt University in Australia, experiencing two vintages in Auckland and a further two in Martinborough before producing his own wine. |
