Vin Alto vineyard was established to produce Italian Style wines in New Zealand. The oldest wine making traditions in Europe were originated by the Romans in Italy, who later shared their knowledge with the French and German colonies. In creating their wines, Enzo and Margaret Bettio have chosen to go back to these roots, taking the finest and oldest traditions and blending them with the latest modern winemaking developments and technology. The Vin Alto vineyard is laid out amongst the hillsides of Clevedon according to Italian tradition and cared for using the same methods used in Northern Italy for hundreds of years. The vines are pruned and leaf plucked by hand to ensure the best quality and ripeness. During harvest, the grapes are carefully selected and hand picked. To press the wine, Vin Alto use a large wooden press imported from Italy and over a hundred years old. To learn traditional winemaking methods, Enzo and Margaret Bettio made numerous visits to the North of Italy and participated in vintage in Piedmont and Verona. They also received a great deal of helpful information, encouragement and advice from Sandro and Dario Boscaini of Masi, the famous producers of the Veronese wines such as Amarone. A European with Italian ancestry, Enzo brings traditional Italian winemaking philosophy and enthusiasm to Vin Alto. This is tempered by Margaret's training in viticulture and winemaking through Charles Sturt University in Australia, which ensures that winemaking methods at Vin Alto incorporate the highest standards of cellar hygiene, rigorous testing and the cutting edge developments in this field. Winemaking is very much a family affair at Vin Alto with both Enzo and Margaret being heavily involved in the day to day operations at Vin Alto. Their two young daughters Nadia and Olivia are also enthusiastic helpers in all aspects of harvest and vineyard work. |
