The Cabbage Tree Vineyard
The Cabbage Tree Vineyard is a small vineyard owned and operated by David and Winifred Bull. Winifred is vineyard manager. David is winemaker. Our vineyard was planted in 1998 and our first vintage was in 2001.
Our name comes from the cabbage trees, botanical name Cordalyne Australis, which grow amongst the vines. Cabbage trees are a much-loved icon of New Zealand.
The Cabbage Tree Vineyard has a prime location on the Martinborough Terrace. In this favoured location aged soils over river gravels provide a perfect terroir for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other early ripening grape varieties. The climate is usually warm and dry, with cool nights, ideal conditions for producing grapes with lively flavour.
Our aim is to integrate viticulture and winemaking to produce premium wines with interesting flavours and character. To optimise quality we do most of the work ourselves.
We hope people get as much enjoyment from drinking our wine as we get from making it.
The Cabbage Tree Vineyard is on the main road into Martinborough. The third vineyard on your left as you approach from Featherston or Greytown. If you get to the shops, or the square, you have gone too far.
