Stonecutter Vineyard
Roger and Lucy planted Stonecutter Vineyard in 1995 having moved to Martinborough with their two small sons Sherratt and Rowan the year before. Their first vintage in 1999 pointed to the special terroir of their 4-hectare paddock, with wines of exuberant power.
Stonecutter is a tiny estate specialising in Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris but with a few hundred plants of Merlot, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc to round out the range. Stonecutter's philosophy is to lightly crop from well-tended vines, producing fruit and wines with intense flavour.
Roger and Lucy are hands on owner operators - they themselves do by far the lion's share of the work, following the cycle of the seasons with planting, pruning, vine training and leaf plucking to ensure plentiful sunlight and air for fully ripe, healthy fruit. The grapes are picked by hand and the wines made on the property.
In late 1998 the couple relocated a classic New Zealand totara and corrugated iron shearers quarters from an historical Wairarapa sheep station. Six months of renovation saw it habitable as a rustically charming home. The style of the shearers quarters is echoed in the winery, designed and built by Roger in 2001.
