The call of the magpie can be heard throughout Hawkes Bay. Sometimes quietly? Often boldly. Always distinctive. These are also the characteristics found in highly sought after wines and so Squawking Magpie was hatched.
Just as the Magpie is synonymous with the Hawkes Bay region, so too is the name Gimblett Road with producing world-renowned wines. From these much celebrated shingle soils of Gimblett Road, hails this boutique label: Squawking Magpie.
Squawking Magpie wines come from the Woodlands Vineyard in Gimblett Gravels. Gavin Yortt first planted grapes in Gimblett Road, namely the Irongate Vineyard, in 1981.
The first 4 hectares of the Woodlands Vineyard were planted in 1995 with further plantings in 1996. A new 20 hectare vineyard has been developed in a joint venture and planted in 2002, having predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
From the very first plantings, the emphasis has been on creating outstanding wines focusing on viticultural excellence. Gavin Yortt and his team hold a firm belief that great wines come from great grapes.
And the proof is there to be tasted in the wines. Squawking Magpie wines exhibit the great elegance and finesse of a unique terroir and true, single vineyard estate management and production.
Our Wines


Squawking Magpie, Gimblett Gravels is the flagship label, presenting wines of richness, strength and complexity. These are wines of the utmost quality and distinction with a refined, elegant Chardonnay and a deep, concentrated Cabernet Merlot, and soon to be released "The Cabernets", a blend of Cabernet Savignon, Cabernet Merlot and Cabernet Franc. From the first vintage in 1999, Squawking Magpie wines have consistently won acclaim and awards.
This success has seen the launch of further labels. Keeping the distinction of single vineyard estates from quality winegrowing areas, the new wines express regional characteristics highlighting varietal flavours, structure and balance.
Gavin Yortt's Philosophy


From day one I have passionately believed that quality fruit in our vineyard would produce outstanding wine in our bottles. Our winemaking philosophy has been based on this and I believe our wine reflects it.
While our technical management and winemaking processes are necessarily complex, our aim is always simple: to create quality wines to be shared with friends and accompanied by great food.
That will always be our aim and I make a personal promise, to diligently and unrelentingly keep on delivering just that.
