Seifried Estate
Hermann and Agnes Seifried established their first 2Ha vineyard on sandy-clay loam land, sloping gently northward in the sheltered Moutere Valley in 1973. Today Seifrieds have 150Ha vineyards on the sandy/shingly Appleby Plains near Rabbit Island and at Brightwater where the land is very stoney to almost rocky!

Main varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot.

In 1993 a Vineyard Restaurant and Functions Centre was opened on the Appleby vineyard near Rabbit Island. This magnificent venue attracts weddings, seminars and other functions in a serene, peacful rural environment, where food and wine can be enjoyed together.

In 1996 Seifrieds moved to a new winery adjacent to the Vineyard Restaurant in Appleby. This shows the confidence the Seifrieds have in the future of Nelson and New Zealand winemaking.

The high quality, consistency and affordability of Seifried wines are features often commented on by our leading wine commentators. Medals are continually awarded accross the range with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,Riesling and Pinot Noir being the stars.

Seifrieds have been exporting wine since 1983. Today about half Seifrieds production goes overseas to be served to the tables of the world.

Today a second generation of Seifrieds is involved in this family business with eldest daughter Heidi and son Chris working in the winemaking, and daughter Anna involved in the sales and marketing areas alongside their parents.
