SCHUBERT WINES was established in 1998 by Kai Schubert, a graduate from the Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim, Germany. Having worked with winemakers like Erni Loosen of Dr. Loosen Estate in Bernkastel, Germany, Kai gained further work experience at various vineyards in Europe as well as in Oregon and South America. His dream however had always been to establish his own vineyard and winery one day. With partner Marion Deimling, also a graduate from Geisenheim, and the couple’s favourite grape Pinot Noir in mind, the focus was always on finding the perfect site for this rather complex and demanding variety. Kai and Marion had been looking for an ideal area for quite a while, but then the dream came true when they visited Martinborough, located in the Wairarapa valley. They were most impressed with the wines they tasted in this dry south-eastern part of the North Island of New Zealand. They searched in several countries including Australia, different parts of Europe and the states of Oregon and California in the US but in the end the Wairarapa in New Zealand was the most interesting region to them.In October 1998 they acquired a small, established vineyard in Martinborough and about 40 hectares of bare land just north of Martinborough, at Dakins Road. High density planting on the land at Dakins Road started in spring 1999 and now 12 hectares are under vine. The main focus is of course on Pinot Noir with which more than 75 % of the vineyard is covered. Some Syrah, Cabernet & Merlot as well as small quantities of some white varieties are also planted. While the first release of Schubert Wines was in November 2001, the inaugural release of Pinot Noir was in March 2003. Schubert Wines was already successful nationally and internationally from the first vintage onwards, having received many gold medals and trophies at various wine competitions in New Zealand and overseas. About 90% of the wines are exported to currently 25 countries.
