Rimu Grove Winery was founded by Patrick and Barbara Stowe in the rolling hills above the scenic Waimea Estuary in 1995. Their search for the ultimate expression of terroir is reflected in their wines: a synergy of Nelson sunshine, moutere clay gravels, maritime microclimate and their pursuit for perfection.Our 7 hectare vineyard is planted with 4 hectares of Pinot Noir (Clones 5, 6, 10/5, 114, 115, 667, 777). 1.5 hectares of Chardonnay (clone 15). 1.5 hectares of Pinot Gris (clone 2/15, Mission). The phylloxera resistant rootstocks used are 101-14, 3309 and Riparia Gloire. The vines are trellised using VSP (vertical shoot positioning) and the spacing is 1.5 x 2.5 meters. The vineyard is dry-farmed with 2-2.5 tonnes/acre cropping. Our soil type is Moutere clay on alluvial gravels. Vines are planted on a gently north facing gradient to allow free drainage; the vineyard slopes down to the Waimea inlet, a tidal estruary. We enjoy a microclimate in a warm bowl which allows for earlier ripening fruit, protection from wind and frost and more summer sun and heat. |
