Redmetal Vineyards |
Redmetal Vineyards began in 1991 with the purchase of a north facing block of prime viticultural land in Hawkes Bay. It is part of an ancient riverbed that once carried rock down to the east coast from the steep Kaimanawa ranges that form part of the spine of New Zealand's North Island. The sharply eroded rock became river tumbled boulders, then eventually wore down to fist sized rocks or smaller as they ground across each other towards the sea. These river deposited gravels form the basis of the fine wine producing areas within Hawkes Bay.
Our vineyard is situated at the south western edge of the Heretaunga Plains, 10 minutes drive from the city of Hastings. It is far enough inland to be insulated from the main cooling effects of the sea breeze and is protected from the prevailing southwesterlies by high mountain ranges and more locally from the south by several ranges of hills. The meso climate here is singularly dry, a rainshadow within an already low rainfall environment. Midsummer temperatures can peak above 40C, and winter frosts ensure vineyard pests and diseases are kept under natural control. |
