Rannach Vineyard |
There are lots of reasons to take drive out to Clevedon. It takes only about 40 minutes from Central Auckland and when you arrive you will be spoilt for choice of food, wine, art, and crafts. A sheltered climate and well-draining soil make the area ideal for growing grapes and Clevedon has been written up by wine journos as one of New Zealand's burgeoning wine trails. The enchanting Ness Valley alone has four vineyards. Make sure you call in at Rannach Vineyard and sample its delicately fruity Merlot which we warmly recommend.
Most winemakers say they make their wines to age, but Christine and Tony Morgan of Rannach Vineyard aim to produce what they describe as "medium-weight, early-maturing wines with clean, ripe fruit".
Merlot and Malbec are the only varieties planted on the couple-s 1.25-hectare site. Fellow red specialist Tim Harris from Kumeu's Harrier Rise Vineyard makes the wine. The first wines produced have been 100% Merlot, and this will continue to be the dominant grape even when the newly planted Malbec vines begin to produce usable fruit in four to five years. |
