Judy Mundy Fowler, a native of Virginia, immigrated to New Zealand and established Puriri Hills Vineyard in 1997. Recognizing that the Auckland area was capable of producing great wines similar in style to those of Pomerol and St. Emilion., she selected her 100 acre property in Clevedon and planted vines. Her aspiration is to create wines that will compete well with the best wines from these prestigious Bordeaux wine communes. Puriri Hills’ wines are a blend of merlot, carmenère, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and malbec. They exhibit an intense and seductive fragrance that is uniquely Clevedon. All grapes are grown and hand-tended and the wine hand-made on the property. The five acres of vineyards are set on high, sloping river terraces overlooking the Wairoa River and the Hauraki Gulf. The wines are aged in French oak barriques for 18-22 months, with the percentage of new oak ranging from 60% to 100%. They are usually fined, but not filtered, then bottle-aged for a further 12 to 24 months before release. Production is limited to about 1000 cases per year, and sales are mostly to New Zealand and Virginia customers, where Judy’s son, Gray Mosby, president of Brightberry Imports, imports and distributes his family’s wine. He’s also usually at Puriri Hills in April to lend a hand with the vintage and winemaking. The wines have had excellent critical reception among the leading New Zealand and Australian wine writers. They have not yet been submitted for review in the US. |
