The Peregrine is a falcon that belongs to the same family as our own New Zealand native falcon, falco novae seelandiae (Karearea). Currently found in both North America and Europe it is a spectacular bird that thrives amongst rugged mountains, lakes and rivers; a way of life which for us symbolises the essence of our vineyards and wines here in Central Otago. Thus Peregrine as opposed to flaco novae seelandiae. This of course is far too much of a tongue twister in any case and likely to cause endless problems when ordering wine. The Karearea, which appears on the $20 note, has just come off the endangered species list and now resides predominantly here in Central Otago. All quite symbolic of course, however, what's life if not a challenge? Our first vintage was in 1998. Production was small, but results were outstanding! Our first wine released, the 1998 Sauvignon Blanc, shot to the top of its category, winning trophies in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Our 1999 Pinot Noir won Gold medals at the Royal Easter Show and the Bragato Awards. Volumes have grown from 2000 cases in 1998, 6500 cases in 1999, and due to strategic planning and plantings, production will steadily increase over the next 2-4 years. Peregrines' focus is on uncompromising quality. |
