We might be called a "Vinepatch" rather than a vineyard!!To find us turn right at Waiuku and meander along the beautiful Awhitu Peninsula to Greenock Drive, Grahams Beach - just over an hour from Auckland. The town of Greenock was surveyed by someone in England back in the late 1800's but it was never built - our road is the only remnant name. The early settlers would not have pictured their kauri and podocarp forest as evolving to a soil structure and meso climate so suited to viticulture.The vines were planted in 1997 in a rain-shadow north-east facing area which has proven to be very suitable for our chardonnay and Syrah varieties.To enhance crop quality, we do a lot of "leaf plucking" to ensure good sunlight and clean air circulation, and about 25-30% of bunches are removed during early ripening to make sure that the crop is of even maturity when ready for hand-picking.Our first vintages were the 2001 Awhitu Greenock Syrah and the 2002 Awhitu Peninsula Chardonnay. |
