Montana Gisborne Winery
The wine industry has become one of Gisborne's biggest earners. And little wonder - Gisborne is something of a wine utopia. With its deep, fertile soils and abundant sunshine, its wines are renowned the world over for their distinctive fruit flavours, full-bodied roundness and easy drinking.
Gisborne's climate is characterised by abundant sunshine. In fact, it is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand.
Gisborne's soils consist of young alluvium, these recent alluvial soils are derived from the soft, calcareous sedimentary rocks of the upper catchment and together constitute the most naturally fertile alluvial soils in the country. Extensive canopy management and the role of covercrops enable the vines to be manipulated to produce the intense aromatic characteristics of the fruit.
Because Gisborne is warmer than many parts of New Zealand, its grapes have less green, herbaceous characters than fruit from some other regions and more of those sought-after lush, tropical characters. Much of the credit for the region's wines must also go to Gisborne's Kaiti clay loam soils which help produce wines with nuances of melon, peach, grapefruit and passionfruit.
