Monarch Wines is situated in the Te Horo region of New Zealand, north of Wellington, near the Kapiti Coast and on the old flood plain of the Otaki River. The site was chosen because of its similarities with the Bordeaux region. Deep fertile river gravels with excellent drainage combined with long hot summer days and cool sea breezes particularly suit the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. However, other varieties have also been successfully grown, attesting to the character and potential of the Otaki flood plain terroir. Te Horo is set to become a major new grape growing region as is evidenced by the fact that Mills Reef recently won gold for Pinot Noir made from grapes grown in Te Horo. |
