Martinborough Vineyard was established in 1980 by a small partnership with the objective of producing world class cool climate wines from classical grape varieties and as such is one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir in New Zealand. From the beginning our philosophy has been Handcrafted Excellence in Wine. Consistently producing outstanding Pinot Noir has seen Martinborough Vineyard become one of the most prestigious winemakers in New Zealand and the New World. 22 years on the company has expanded the original 16 acre paddock to 52 acres (21 hectares) and the 2002 case sales will reach just under 6000. The vineyard is situated in the exclusive Martinborough Terrace Appellation in the South East of New Zealand-s north island. The appellation experiences cool climate conditions with a long summer, low rainfall and free draining soils which often see us compared to Burgundy in France. Pinot Noir is the flagship of Martinborough Vineyard and represents 50% of the vineyard's production. Further to the climate and soils, the traditional finesse, elegance and complexity of the Pinot Noir produced by Martinborough Vineyard can also be attributed to - diversity of 10 Pinot Noir clones - vines aged up to 22 years - emphasis on intensive vine and canopy care for optimisation of flavour, colour and tannin. Fruit is carefully sorted in the vineyard at picking and then again in the winery. There is minimal intervention in the winery with traditional techniques used to encourage expression. The Pinot Noir is aged for 11-12 months in a selection of the finest quality oak barriques. Once bottled it is cellared for 6 months to allow integration. Further cellaring is encouraged as our Pinot Noir develops so many wonderful complexities with age. On the journey from 1980 numerous medals, trophies and accolades have been collected including best Pinot Noir (NZ, Australia and Singapore), best Pinot Noir worldwide (UK), best red wine in the sky in the world (USA) and best wine of the show (Singapore). The winery and vineyard are committed to protecting the environment. Policies implemented in 1998 (ISO 14001) ensure responsible viticultural and winemaking practices to limit the impact on the environment and promote sustainability in the industry. Our portfolio also includes Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling with our wine currently being exported to over 9 countries including the UK, USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium, France and Germany.
