This Hawke's Bay boutique winery was founded in 1998 by winemaker Bruce Nimon, set on the terraces overlooking the Maraekakaho stream, 25km south-west of Hastings, with views to the ranges beyond. The winery was designed by Wellington architect Rodney Sampson to reflect the rural heritage of the region; untreated rough sawn timber for the tasting room and plastered straw bales for the barrel room. The recently opened wine cellar is open for wine tasting and sales. The winery courtyard has two specially built marquee sites for weddings and functions; as well as picnic area with tables and umbrellas. VINEYARDS The soil types of the two terraces are so different, they make two contrasting vineyards. Named after the two bridges that are located on either side of Lucknow Estate. The highest terrace, "Quarry Bridge" with its deep red metal sub-soils is planted in Merlot, Malbec and a small amount of Pinot Gris. The lower terrace, "Ben Lomond" is made up of river gravels and silt is planted in Syrah and Merlot. Intensive planting on two meter rows allows for crop thinning to improve grape quality and still achieve a reasonable crop level from the site. |
