Lombardi was established on the sunny North facing slopes of Te Mata hills in Hawkes Bay in 1948. In 1994 it was taken over by its existing owners, Andy Colhart and Kim Thorp.Andy and Kim have worked hard since to create a unique and exciting location on the winemaking map in Hawkes Bay. Significant plantings of predominately Bordeaux red varietals produce Estate grown wines. Lombardi is one of the most beautiful of Hawke's Bay vineyards. It spills down the hill and wraps itself around an open air Amphitheatre for concerts at Sunset, underground cellars hidded behind huge native timber doors providing the optimun environment for barrel and bottle maturation. Though production is small, Lombardi does not intend to grow above the 10ha. Special attention is paid to keeping crop levels down to about 2 tonne/acre. All grapes are hand picked. The whites are whole pressed and the ereds backet pressed. These efforts along with the special mesoclimate created by the sehelter provided by Te Mata peak, north facing slopes, loamy friable soil above free-draining fist sized stones creates distinctive, full-bodied, well balanced wines. |
