Kemblefield Estate Winery, Ltd.
Kemblefield's Mangatahi vineyards occupy a magnificent spot, on free draining terraces running down to the Ngaruroro River, in New Zealand's Hawkes Bay. An impressive 1000 square metre architecturally-designed winery is the centrepiece of the estate.
The site was chosen for it's gravelly soils, and hot summer days and cool nights. These combine to produce the even ripening grapes with intense fruit characteristics that impart real character to wines carrying the Kemblefield label.
Plantings completed in 2000 has increased the area in vine from 59 to 77 hectares. Staged plantings of the balance of the 200 hectare estate will see approximately one half planted in red varietals and one half in white. The Winery has been expanded to accommodate the resulting enlarged harvest. Additional overseas markets are being evaluated as production levels become available to fully service those markets.
A new Visitors and Function Centre has been built on an impressive site overlooking the lower two terraces, and was inaugurated on July 4th, 2002 ; Kemblefield's 10th year anniversary.
John and his team look to consistently produce quality wines under two brands...using our own grapes for all wines (except Gewurztraminer) to both give control, and to yield clean fruit reflecting our Mangatahi site. We employ traditional methods, such as small-lot open-top fermentation, hand plunging of the cap, French oak barrel aging, and barrel fermentation, together with the latest technology available.
