KariKari Estate
Northland is the birthplace of New Zealand wine, with Reverend Samuel Marsden planting the first vines in Northland in 1819. Just under 200 years later Karikari Estate Vineyard is opening its doors to become New Zealand's northern most winery located on the beautiful Karikari Peninsula at Doubtless Bay.

The first vines were planted in 1998 and with the production of its first vintage in 2003 KariKari Estate is boasting some 25 hectares of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc, Malbec, Pinotage, Chardonnay, Viognier and Semillon. With another 16 hectares to be planted in 2004 including grape varieties such as Montepuliciano, a variety that enjoys this regions climate, will see Karikari Estate become a major player in the New Zealand wine market.

Karikari Estate's philosophy is to ensure quality vineyard management and utilization of state of the art technology in the winery combined with a highly skilled and extremely passionate winemaker. This philosophy can be recognized in the wineries first vintage of 2003, an elegant Chardonnay. The 2003 reds looking equally as good and will be available for purchase later this year.

The state of the art winery designed by Paul Kelly and Bob Haig, who consulted with some of New Zealand's top winemakers and viticulturists will be completed in 2004, in time to receive this vintages grapes. Ben Dugdale who has worked as winemaker/assistant wine maker at Coopers Creek, Dry River and Matakana Estate will be starting with Karikari Estate as their chief winemaker in June 2004. Kim Crawford has been consulting to Karikari Estate and will continue in this role.

Karikari Estate is the sister company to the Carrington Club Resort where wine enthusiasts can stay in luxury lodge and villa accommodation and utilize the club cars to drive to the winery which overlooks the resort and out to Karikari Beach.
