The label is not particularly well-known because the only place you can buy the wine is at the restaurant created by Rimmer and Marjolein Hettinga after they arrived in New Zealand from Holland five years ago. They did so after buying an orchard on the outskirts of Hastings, replacing apples with grape vines and transforming a shed on the property into a 50-seater - la carte restaurant/cellar door, combined with a gallery for local artists.
The nine-hectare vineyard is now in production and Rimmer says they are looking at bare land nearby to plant another.
The wines include Merlot, a Cabernet Franc-predominant red, a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec. They are sold under both a premium and an estate label which each bear the family coat of arms. A M-thode Traditionnelle will be released soon. |
