Glenmark Wines
When Waipara's "original" vineyard, planted 1981 by farmer John McCaskey on his "Weka Plains" property, it heralded the start of a whole new industry in Waipara. By 1986 he had converted a haybarn near the Waipara township to become the areas' first winery & joint processing venture alongside the Waipara school. A winegarden/restaurant was established at the Weka Plains homestead in 1992 & this is soon to relocate to the parklike surroundings of the "House o' Hill" property at the end of Mackenzies Road with extra attractions including a 9 hole golf course.
All wines are estate grown from 20 year old vines.
- Riesling: 'Weka Plains' dry & mediums have racked up 2 gold, 5 silvers, & 14 bronze medals - indeed Glenmarks' speciality.
- Waipara Red: started at the 86 vintage with a bronze for the opening of the winery. This Cabernet based wine has gone on to win a NZ Champion gold, 3 silvers & 4 bronze.
- Waipara White: is the districts' only Muller Thurgau with small amounts from other vines blended in. A mainstay in the Glenmark folio.
- Chardonnay: from only two rows has brought home gold & bronze medals & is usually lightly oaked.
- Gewurztraminer: has proved a tricky grape to get regular production from. Having collected 3 bronzes the "Weka Plains" grown gewurztraminer is that 5 o'clock under a shady tree with crackers & cheese wine.
- Pinot Noir: Visiting wine guru Alan Young was surprised to try a 1990 Pinot & make special mention of it. Glenmarks' stylish Pinot tends lighter than many.
- Triple Peaks: dry & medium are the house wines of the vineyard being a very popular blend of Riesling & Muller Thurgau.
Varieties grown & included in the blends are Pinot Gris, Briedecker, Merlot, Malbec & Siebel some of which will be expanded soon.
