Gladstone Vineyard is located near the small settlement of Gladstone in the Wairarapa region in New Zealand. The Gladstone District is a fast growing wine area, as winemakers realise the potential of soil and climate that produce low yielding, rich concentrated grapes. Our vines are planted on a free draining terrace, once the river bed of the nearby Ruamahanga River. There are 10 acres of vines on Gladstone Vineyard's home blocks. A further 25 acres of vines planted 3-5 years ago at our Dakins Road block started producing in 2004. We currently produce about 4,000 cases of wine each year, increasing to at least 7,500 cases in the next 2-3 years.Since its inception Gladstone Vineyard has been a member of the New Zealand Sustainable Winegrowing Programme and is an accredited member. It looks at the aspect of wine grape production on all aspects of the environment. Maintaining sustainability requires a process of continuous improvement and adaptation to change. We are wholly committed to that at Gladstone. The Vineyard is owner operated by Christine and David Kernohan who took over the vineyard in February 1996. Both born in Glasgow, Scotland, they emigrated to New Zealand nearly 30years ago. Christine is the chief winemaker, involved in all stages of the winemaking, and manages the business while David runs his own business, Architecture Diagnostics from the Vineyard, and spends his weekends serving wine! |
