Greystone Pinot Gris 2008

Greystone Pinot Gris 2008
Trophy: Champion Pinot Gris NZ International Wine Show
Loads of stonefruit on the nose with hints of gris spiciness. Think grilled summer peaches sprinkled with cinnamon and a hint of vanilla bean.

The spicy honeyed characteristic is carried over to the palate which has the trademark viscous mid-palate weight. It deceives with the sensation of sweetness, yet actually finishes quite dry.
Winemaker: Dominic Maxwell
Region: Waipara
Variety: Pinot Gris
Producer: Greystone Wines

Harvest Date: 2nd April

Wine Notes

Winemaker Notes: Varietal flavours were accumulated through hang time on the vines well into Autumn. Unripe bunches were removed prior to harvesting, leaving ripe bunches only for harvesting during the cool night temperatures. Free Run and Pressing fractions were settled separately before blending and fermentation. Fermentation was under cool conditions to enhance the Pinot Gris aromatics. This wine was left to find its natural balance - slightly drier than our 2007 Pinot Gris due to lower harvest sugar levels – a result of the slightly cooler weather over the 2008 harvest. Extended on time on lees and lees stirring has provided texture through the palate whilst keeping this balance.

Viticulture Notes: Gentle slopes, NW facing on wind blown loess (silt) over clay. Limestone deposits through vineyard. Density 2500 vines/Ha on VSP trellis. Some dense patches of soil providing texture to the wines.
