Esk Valley Reserve Hawkes Bay Merlot/Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
This is consistently one of New Zealand’s top red wines and this vintage is no exception. The wine is deeply coloured with aromatics hinting at black fruits and chocolate. The flavours are typical of Gimblett Gravel merlot blends, with fruitcake, plum, cherry, chocolate and oak spice all evident.
Region: Hawkes Bay
Variety: Bordeaux Style
Producer: Esk Valley Estate Ltd
Winemaker Notes: The grapes for this wine were destemmed and crushed to our 75 year old open topped concrete fermenters and inoculated with selected red wine yeast strains. Once active, the ferments were plunged six hourly by hand to ensure a complete and gentle extraction of colour and tannin. When fermentation and after lengthy period of maceration on skins, the new wines were pressed to tank and barrel and underwent malolactic fermentation. The wines were then aged in french oak barriques for twenty months before a light egg white fining and bottling.
Viticulture Notes: The summer of 2005 was dry and hot allowing for the development of thick skins in our red varietals. This provided juice of high colour and ripe tannins. After a period of inclement weather in late March, our red harvest was conducted under clear skies with grapes picked in perfect condition. This will be regarded as a classic Hawkes Bay harvest in years to come.
Cellaring: Cellaring is recommended to soften the firm tannins, but the wine can equally be enjoyed in its youth.
Food Match: Red meat and game dishes will be excellent choices. Matches well with hard cheese as well.
