Tongariro Estate

The Waikato region is largely flourishing farmland and represents about 1% of New Zealand's ever-expanding vineyards. Chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc are the most consistently planted grape varieties. This region enjoys a moderately warm climate by New Zealand standards and has soil of heavy loam over a clay subsoil. The Bay of Plenty is home to the smallest wine region in New Zealand. The area is a mixture of rolling farm land, low mountain ranges and orchards scattered throughout. Soils consist of volcanic rock and ash deposits to heavy loam over clay through to pumice on the picturesque coast. The warm, temperate year-round climate produces some top quality wines.

About Ohinemuri Estate Wines

Ohinemuri Estate Wines We came to Karangahake in 1988 on a Sunday drive. After we saw the Latvian style buildings ( built by a set designer from Covent Garden), we fell in love with the place and bought it. We intended to grow our own grapes but the high rainfall was the inhibiting factor.

We source all our grapes from contract growers in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. We have a long term relationship with our growers, going back several years. In conjunction with our growers we try to achieve the highest possible quality for each variety.

Our vinification is a combination of old techniques and new technologies. We try to avoid the use of chemicals where ever possible and try to produce a natural wine. It is our aim to produce wines with finesse, complexity and varietal expression.
At present we produce Chardonnay, Gewuerztraminer, Riesling and Merlot. Ocassionally we have a one off wine depending on the vintage and variety.

During the summer months we have special theme based dinner parties with live entertainment.

On fine Sunday afternoons we have a classical guitarist performing in our courtyard.
