Pinot Noir

A very demanding grape that asks much of both the vinegrower and the winemaker. It is solely responsible for the great red wines of Burgundy. New Zealand's pinot noirs, especially those of Otago, have deservedly gained a worldwide reputation and have become this country's most acclaimed and second most planted variety.

An intense forest floor nose is followed by sweet, ripe, juicy plums flavours and soft, velvety tannins. It has lovely fruit to oak integration with a tight acid backbone. An excellent consistency through the palate leads to a soft, elegant finish. Excellent now, may well get even better.

Grasshopper Rock Central Otago Pinot Noir 2006
Wine Description
”Soft, silken and charming Pinot Noir with crushed strawberry, subtle spice and red cherry flavours. A gentle example of Central Otago Pinot Noir in a light and supple style.” Bob Campbell MW

"The attractive 2006 vintage is a medium bodied style with vibrant cherryish flavours showing good ripeness and some savoury complexity - I think $29.95 is realistic and competitive." Michael Cooper wine writer

Tasting Notes
This ruby red wine shows aromas of Central Otago cherries with hints of Turkish delight, red licorice, chocolate and spice. The palate is soft, supple and silky, with intense cherry fruits on the front, which persist through to the mid and back. This is backed up by a creamy texture and good tannin structure.
Winemakers Notes
The 2006 Pinot Noir was fermented in small open top fermentation vats, and then put to French oak barrels, where the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and aging for ten months.

Matua Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006
Tasting Note: Parcels were machine harvested and fermented separately on skins utilizing various types of vessels to complete the primary fermentation. A variety of selected yeast strains were used to carry out the fermentation to enhance various characters in the individual parcels and to create complexity in the final blend. Malolactic fermentation was completed in a mix of seasoned French (20%) and American (5%) oak along with stainless steel tanks. The parcels were then matured for a further five months before final blending.
