| Winegrowing in Northland |
Marsden Estate Ltd | The approach to Northland from Auckland passes sun-drenched golden beaches and bays through the ragged eastern coast to Whangarei and the picturesque natural beauty of the Bay of Islands.
Dispersed throughout Northland are three separate districts, the Bay of Islands, Kaitaia, on the West coast where the first grapes in New Zealand were planted and Whangarei, the centre of the northland.
The range of clay soils to free-draining volcanic structures, and a benevolent climate in this beautiful area are leading to a rapidly expanding region, earning a reputation for stunning styles of red wine. In particular cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay, the regions most extensively planted grape variety.

| About
Okahu Estate |
|
New Zealand's most northern vineyard and winery. The winery is situated 3.5ks from Kaitaia on the road to Ahipara which is at the southern end of the Ninety Mile Beach.
The first vines were established in 1984 by vineyard owner by Monty Knight, since then label has earned a reputation for consistent quality, wining numerous awards including two gold medals for their Chardonnay and one gold medal for Shiraz.
The vineyard flavours give the wines a point of difference, which set them apart from other New Zealand labels.
At Okahu, our aim is to produce the highest quality wines, with distinctive regional and varietal style. As a pioneering Winemaker of the Far North, we are fostering this quality and are always striving to improve it
All the wines in our range are named either after people (associated with the family or business), or places (the local area). As an extension of this theme we have a layering system, with three categories or 'tiers'. The "Shipwreck Bay" series (quality wines yet accessible), "Clifton"& "Ninety Mile" series (reserve or premium) and at the top of the stack, the "Kaz" (ultra premium) series!
