'Gritty Determination wins gold for Kirkpatrick Estate Winery'
The determined team from Kirkpatrick Estate Winery have been awarded gold at the 2010 Royal Easter Show for their 2009 Reserve Malbec, the only gold awarded in the other red varietals category.
The decision to keep the Malbec barrels as a single varietal wine was made by Simon Kirkpatrick after the 2005 vintage, as the wine in barriques was too stunning to become a blending component for the Merlot. The 2005 Reserve Malbec went on to win Silver at the 2006 Bragato Awards and 4 stars in Winestate magazine.
Surprisingly enough, the Malbec vines were the most nutritionally deficient vines on the property when Simon Kirkpatrick purchased the boutique winery. The canopy turned red at veraison in 2004 but after a year of careful viticultural management, rectifying zinc and magnesium deficiencies, the vines started to bear fabulous fruit.
The decision to keep the Malbec as a single varietal wine is made vintage by vintage ensuring that only an exceptional wine is released as the Kirkpatrick Reserve Malbec. Since 2005 the Malbec has become the spice component in the Wild Rosé, and a blending component for the award winning Kirkpatrick Merlot. Near the end of barrel maturation of the 2009 wine, the Kirkpatrick team decided to take a gamble and pull the wine from wood to enter it in the 2010 Royal Easter Show, to coincide any potential success with the planned rebranding of the Kirkpatrick Label.
It paid off! “The Gold is an affirmation that our determination is not in vain, and that our belief in the Kirkpatrick site does, with our fantastic team work, produce consistent award winning wines. All of our fruit is grown on site and precise vineyard management is a key focus”, comments Winemaker/Viticulturist Anita Ewart-Croy.
All key winemaking and viticultural and winemaking decisions are made as a team with expertise and fresh ideas coming from Managing Director Simon Kirkpatrick and especially Assistant Winemaker Justin Atkinson, whose international experience has been invaluable.
Watch out for the stunning new branding soon to be released for the Kirkpatrick Estate Winery wines.
