Leading Aussie liquor retailer keen on Hawke’s Bay Syrah
Hawke’s Bay wines and Syrah in particular, look likely to grace the shelves of Australia’s leading retail liquor stores following success at this country’s largest wine event held recently in Australia.
Lyn Bevin, Executive Officer from Hawke’s Bay’s regional wine organisation, took a selection of Hawke’s Bay wines to the New Zealand in a Glass events held in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane at the end of February.
Now the Coles Liquor Group has requested a submission from Hawke’s Bay Syrah producers that has got local wineries busy selecting their wines for HBWG to submit.
“Wineries have until 17 March to get their wines and the appropriate information to us and I know there has been much activity going on to meet that deadline,” Ms Bevin said.
The Coles Liquor Group includes the Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, 1st Choice Liquor Superstore and Coles Online retail outlets. It is one of Australia’s leading liquor retail groups in New Zealand’s largest wine market.
In addition to the Coles inquiry, Ms Bevin said she was busy providing various Australian trade outlets with the distribution details of local wines they were keen to list, and winery details for some who did not yet have distributors.
Hawke’s Bay was the only regional presence at the sold out shows and Ms Bevin said there had been a great response to the Hawke’s Bay stand. “It seemed that the attendees, wine trade, media and consumers, enjoyed being able to taste something other than Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
“They were keen to learn of the style differences between Hawke’s Bay and Australian wines and in particular, our Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah wines had great appeal.
“It seemed that once they tried these wines they were hooked and I am confident we have converted non-Merlot and non-Chardonnay drinkers who did try and liked them, to buy our wines again in the future,” Ms Bevin said.
In one seminar at the event, the co-president of Sommeliers of Australia, Ben Edwards spoke highly of New Zealand’s fuller bodied red wines and Hawke’s Bay
Merlot blends and Syrah specifically, and this gave greater focus to the Hawke’s Bay stand, Ms Bevin reported.
There were also a number of registrations made for the inaugural Hot Red Hawke’s Bay shows that HBWG will be taking to Australia in July this year. This annual wine tasting event has been held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch for the past five years and attracts hundreds of wine trade, media and discerning wine consumers.
This year already 22 Hawke’s Bay wineries have committed to travel to Melbourne and Sydney to provide Australian wine trade, media and consumers a chance to sample local red wines and meet the respective winemakers.
