More recognition for Greystone’s Pinot Gris
Greystone Wines were awarded a gold medal for their 2009 Pinot Gris at the recent Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.
This adds to an enviable list of gongs for this wine including the Pinot Gris Trophy at The New Zealand International Wine Show, gold at the International Aromatics Competition and a “highly recommended” at the Sydney Top 100 competition late last year. NZ Wine writer Michael Cooper also recently described the 2009 Greystone Pinot Gris as “benchmark stuff”.
In addition the 2008 Greystone Pinot Gris was chosen as Bob Campbell MW’s top NZ Pinot Gris for the year in December’s North and South Magazine. The 2008 was also a finalist in Australian Winestate Magazine’s Wine of the Year competition for the Pinot Gris/ Pinot Grigio. The 2007 Greystone Pinot Gris took out this award in the previous year.
“We would like to think that any serious conversation about NZ Pinot Gris should include mention of Greystone. Three highly awarded vintages in a row is testament to the special site we grow the grapes on and an empathetic hand in both the vineyard and the winery” suggests marketing manager Angela Clifford.
“All of Greystone’s wines are estate grown and the Pinot Gris is grown on gently sloping North West facing sites. There are limestone deposits throughout the vineyard and the dense soils, along with great diurnal temperatures, definitely give us fantastic profiles in the final wines” suggests viticulturist Nick Gill.
“The Royal Easter Show is the only NZ show at this time of the year which gives us an indication of how the wine is developing in the bottle. Many of the other national shows happen very soon after we release the wine” comments winemaker Dom Maxwell. “We are looking for texture in the wine and this definitely develops with time”.
Greystone proprietor Bruce Thomas notes that “recent NZ Winegrowers reports indicate that Pinot Gris exports have increased by 64% over the last 12 months and that Pinot Gris shipments are growing at least as quickly as Sauvignon Blanc. I think the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury is well placed to take advantage of this trend as the climate and soil types suit aromatic varieties”.
Trophies for the Royal Easter Wine Awards are announced on March 20th.
