Cowra Regional Vineyard Association secures marketing funding

Cowra Canowindra winemakers have recently been granted funding from the Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) in order to pursue a raft of instrumental marketing initiatives.

This marketing funding has been matched by a group of passionate local Cowra Canowindra winemakers and associated businesses, increasing the total marketing funds to around $40,000. Support has also been given from Cowra Shire Council, Cabonne Shire Council and Cowra Tourism.

“It is a very exciting time in the region,” commented Cowra Regional Vineyards Association (CRVA) President and local vigneron Tom Ward. “There is a committed group of businesses that are prepared to invest in the future of our region. This investment, along with the funding provided by the DSRD will ensure that we can go out into the market and promote this great region.”

“The development and implementation of our marketing strategy would not be possible without the support of the DSRD. We are working closely with them to strengthen the region, especially during this economic downturn. Their support will assist the region’s growth in the wine sector and subsequently promote further jobs and investment.”

“The timing is perfect because as a winemaking region, we are starting to gain some much deserved recognition for the quality of our wines. The recent Top100 NSW wines from renowned wine critic James Halliday included a number of wines from the Cowra Canowindra region, including Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot and Chardonnay. This follows on from major trophy wins at national wine shows including “Best Alternative Variety Wine” at the Brisbane Fine Wine Festival and “Best Single Vineyard Wine” at Melbourne Wine Show last year.”

The objectives defined by the group include raising consumer awareness for the region and subsequently increase tourism whilst building sales of Cowra Canowindra branded wines.

The new marketing initiatives includes a Cowra Canowindra wine lunch in Canberra where the vignerons will showcase the regional wines to a group of award winning restaurateurs, wine distributors and journalists. This lunch will also be conducted in Sydney to a wider group of influential wine media.

The award winning wines that will be showcased comprise:

Rosnay Sparkling Rosé 2009
Gardners Ground Shiraz 2008
Windowrie ‘The Mill’ Verdelho 2009
Pig in the House Shiraz 2008
Spring Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
Wallington Petit Verdot 2004
Kalari Chardonnay 2008
Mulyan Block 9 Shiraz Viognier 2007
Tom’s waterhole Semillon 2008
Swinging Bridge Shiraz 2008
Cowra Estate Merlot 2007
River Park Rosé 2009

The Cowra Canowindra winemakers are also heavily involved in the development of sustainable agriculture with many local grape growers signing on to the ‘Cowra Sustainable Wine Partnership’. This partnership is being watched carefully by other wine regions as a model that can be developed and expanded in other wine regions.

The marketing group also includes a number of like-minded Cowra Canowindra businesses that work closely with the region’s winemakers. These businesses include Neila, The Old Vic Inn, Balloon Joy Flights Canowindra, The Vineyard Motel, Taste Canowindra and The Quarry Restaurant.
