Knighthood for wine writer April 2008 The first fulltime wine writer ever to receive a Dutch knighthood, called the 'Order of Oranje Nassau' is Hubrecht Duijker.
He recently (and to his total surprise) was awarded this distinction through the mayor of his village, mainly for his vast oeuvre, which includes more than a hundred books about wine, probably an all-time world record.
His first wine book was published in 1973, and this month number 110 is coming off the press.
Many of his works have been translated and even awarded in other languages. He has received the Glenfiddich Award (England), the Julia Child Award (US), the very first literary prize of the Académie du Vin de Bordeaux. He was also the first wine writer from a non-English speaking country to receive the 'Oscar' of the wine world, Wine Communicator of the Year.
For several of these books – including wine atlases for France and Spain – he has closely cooperated with Hugh Johnson.
His website is www.hubrechtduijker.com.
